Embedded Systems

What you need to know

Embedded systems are found in many everyday devices. Being familiar with examples helps you understand how they are applied in real-world scenarios and answer context-based exam questions.

Key points

  • Washing machines — embedded systems control water temperature, cycle timing, and motor speed.
  • Microwave ovens — embedded systems manage cooking time, power levels, and safety features.
  • Traffic lights — embedded systems control timing sequences and respond to sensors.
  • Car examples: auto lights, auto wipers, sat nav/GPS, cruise control, parking sensors, engine management, lane assist, climate control.
  • Other examples: central heating thermostats, fitness trackers, digital watches, dishwashers.
  • Exam Tip:In context questions, identify what the embedded system CONTROLS and explain that it has LIMITED FUNCTIONS dedicated to that specific task.
  • Common Mistake:Giving examples outside the context. If asked 'identify an embedded system in a car', do NOT give 'washing machine' — stay within the scenario given.
  • Exam Tip:For 3-mark questions, give: (1) a valid example, (2) it has limited/specific functions, (3) it has a dedicated microprocessor or the user cannot change its function.
