Identify the points in a solution where a decision has to be taken

Identify the points in a solution where a decision has to be taken.

2.1.4 Thinking Logically

Thinking Logically — Note 1 of 3

Candidates need to understand that decisions are made within programs and be able to identify where these decisions take place within an algorithm or program.

What you need to know

Programs make decisions at points where the next action depends on the data. Identifying these decision points is the first step in designing the logic of a solution.

What to know

  • A decision is needed wherever the program's next action depends on a condition, e.g. checking whether input is valid or whether a player has won.
  • Decisions are implemented with selection (if, elseif, else, switch/case) and with the conditions that control loops.
  • In flowcharts, decision points are drawn as diamonds with labelled Yes/No (True/False) branches.

Exam technique

  • Tip:You may be asked to identify where decisions occur in an algorithm or program, or to add a missing decision.
